Summer is here! For many, that means beach time! For those of us living in Southern California, the beach is a wonderful respite from the hot temperatures that dominate these months.

The sun, the sand, and the sea.

What could be a better way to pass the time on a hot summer’s day?

But it isn’t just the temperate climate that tantalizes so many people. The beach can actually put you in a better mood, making you feel calmer and more relaxed.

Why is that?

We got you covered!

Enjoy 3 reasons why so many people feel relaxed at the beach.

1. The Sun: An. Easy Source of Vitamin D!

Of course, being at the beach means being outside, which in turn gives you a chance for an abundance of Vitamin D, as a well as other positive benefits. Just the act of being outside can help lift your mood. With the California heat, it’s not exactly fun to go outside at times. However, at the beach, it’s almost the opposite. You don’t want to stay inside. You want to be out, feeling the cool marine breeze, breathing in the smells of the ocean, and gazing at a vast expanse of sapphire blue.

As strong as the call is to spend your days exploring under the sun with the sand at your feet, remember to put on sunscreen! Though there are many benefits of being out where the suns rays can wash over you, you can get sunburned! And that is never fun, or relaxing.

2. The Sand: Who Wouldn’t Want to Go Barefoot?

You can’t have the beach without the endless stretch of a sandy shore! There’s something about running barefoot on the firm, yet soft ground that greets the ocean. Being barefoot on the beach is pretty much the norm. It’s like there’s a siren call to pull off your shoes and feel the earth beneath your feet.

But, there’s more to the draw of bare feet in the sand than just simple pleasure. Sinking your feet into warm sand can be grounding, which in turn reduces anxiety, resulting in you feeing calmer. It’s easy to become distracted trying to determine how warm or cool the sand feels, and where the grains find hiding places between your toes. There’s no room for worries or anxious thoughts.

3. The Sea: A Natural White Noise

Ever wonder why listening to the ocean can be so calming? Listening to the gentle rhythm of waves growing and breaking helps to de-stimulate your brain, letting it gently focus on the calming sound. According to an article by NBC news, the sounds of the waves, coupled with other visual stimuli, help to trigger your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps you with feeling more relaxed.

No wonder why there are so many YouTube sleep aid videos incorporating the sounds of the ocean. That soft rhythmic noise can be an easy lullaby to fall asleep to.
