3 Tips for You and Your Pets to Beat the Heat in Southern California
~ Natalia Radcliffe ~
One thing California is known for is its warm summers. Especially here in Southern California, it can get pretty hot during July through even October. But not to fear!! As Prospector Ranch is located in Southern California, we have some tips from our team who’ve lived in here for years on how to beat the heat.
1. Drink lots of water!
Unlike some other states, California has dry summers. This means there is less water in the air. Though it can be nice for those who prefer to not feel sweaty every time they walk out of the house, that doesn’t mean you don’t sweat; rather the sweat evaporates pretty quickly. This means it’s extra important to stay hydrated. Dehydration is not a fun thing to experience, and it can be especially easy to become dehydrated in a dry environment. A good rule of thumb is to always have a bottle of water with you (and an extra one for your pet if you’re bringing them along). You might not think you’ll need it, but chances are you’ll be grateful you did. And speaking of your pets, make sure that your animal family member always has plenty of water during the summer days. Just like us, animals will drink more water when it’s hot to stay hydrated and cool off.
2. Shade is your best friend!
If you’re going to be outside for a long period of time, make sure to take a break in the shade, or even conduct most of your outdoor activities in the shade, if possible. Having the sun beat down on you will make you hotter, which may cause you to dehydrate even faster, even if you’re consistently drinking water. Especially in the summertime, the sun can feel hot. So make sure to hang out in a shady area, even if it’s for intervals, when you’re outside. This goes for your pets as well. If they have a home outside, or are roaming around outside, make sure there is a shady area they can access, when they want to escape the sun’s rays. Trust us, they’ll be grateful you did.
3. Visit cooler places!
With a lot of schools off for the summer, you might have a little more time to take a trip and see more of the state. We recommend visiting areas closer to the coast. They will be a lot more temperate and usually cooler than more inland locations. Places like Ventura, Santa Monica, and Malibu are all home to beaches, so they usually will have cooler temperatures. In addition, you could go swimming in the ocean and cool off that way, too! There are many beaches in these areas that are dog friendly as well. Check out some of our previous articles for ideas! Prospector Ranch is located in Ventura County, and is but a short drive from all these places, so if you’re looking for somewhere to stay for a cool weekend getaway, we’ve got you covered! Our Vintage 1972 Airstream is complete with an air conditioner and is pet friendly, so you can bring the whole family!
