Cool Idea For the Summer: The Beach
~ Natalia Radcliffe ~One thing California summers are known for is the temperature. Depending on where you live in Southern California, temperatures can climb past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and sometimes only come down to the 80s or 70s at night. Those are the days that you have a fan blowing on you full blast when you go to bed, in the hopes it will cool you off just a little.
On these kinds of days, it can turn into a spontaneous beach day. Forget your plans, you are escaping to the beach to escape the triple degree heat, even if it’s just for a little bit.
But, what to do when you arrive at the beach?
Well, if the waves are calling to you, there are plenty of places to catch some sweet waves. We actually did a blog on some sweet surf spots, if you want to check that out!
You can also simply lay on the sand and soak up some of the ocean ambience and the sun’s rays. Given beaches are more temperate than more inland areas, the sun in theory won’t feel nearly as blazing. Plus, you typically have an ocean breeze that will also cut through the warmth. If you want some shade, you pack an umbrella or a large hat so you don’t accidentally get sunburned if you doze off.
If getting into the ocean or dealing with the sand isn’t your thing, many beach towns have a plethora of restaurants and shops to peruse. Some places even have wine tasting! You can get the benefits of beach weather without preparing for the water or the sand.
Ventura Harbor Village for example has a yummy fish and chips called Andrea’s place right near the ocean, where seagulls are common companions and you can have a first-rate view of the sparkling blue sea. Santa Monica Pier has a small amusement park, restaurants, and shopping to explore.
These are just a snippet of examples. Ventura and Malibu are under an hour’s drive from here at Prospector Ranch, and Santa Monica and Santa Barbara are under a 2 hour’s drive, so if you are in the area or are staying at one of our Airbnbs (our unique Conestoga covered wagon, our 1927 vintage Airstream, or our rustic Safari tent) you have these places to choose from that make it an easy day trip, perfect for that spontaneous itch to escape the blazing heat.
